Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course


This course is ideal for new owners conscious of the difficulty and hazards of boat handling in the marina.

A two-day course covering basic boat handling, engine checks and safety.

It is useful for crews as well as skippers. Apart from the obvious safety benefits of extra boat handlers on board, it adds interest if everyone can contribute to the trip.
Full use of Nottinghamshire Boat Training vessels are available, alternatively a course can be put together and conducted on your own boat at a location or marina to suit you.

Requirements & Outcomes:

Assumed knowledge:
•  None

Minimum duration:
•  2 Day

Minimum age:
•  12 years. Certificates for children aged between 12 and 16 will be endoursed to show that they must use boats only under the supervision of a responsible adult.

Course content:
•  Safety, Helmsmanship, Locks and Tunnels, Collision avoidance, Intruduction to engine maintenance.

Ability after the course:
•  Able to helm a vessel safely on inland waterways.
